The Silent Mirror and the Lies That Broke My Family
“The baby is at the St. Jude Private Clinic,” Caleb said.
“It’s up on the northern bluff, past the old lighthouse.”
“Margaret bought the staff there years ago.”
“They have him registered under a fake name.”
My heart hammered against my ribs, a dull, heavy thud.
“What name?” I asked, my voice dangerously quiet.
“Leo Reed,” Caleb muttered.
“She kept the first name. She wanted him to have the family name, but without Emily’s memory attached to it.”
“Who is watching him?” I asked.
“Dr. Vale,” Caleb said.
“He runs the private wing.”
“He’s the one who signed the fake certificate for Emily.”
I tightened my grip on the ledger, the leather creaking under my fingers.
“And where is Margaret keeping the rest of the records?” I asked.
Before Caleb could answer, a sharp metallic scraping sound echoed from the dark pier outside.
Sophia spun around, her flashlight cutting through the gloom toward the entrance.
“Did you hear that?” she whispered.
I kept my gun leveled at Caleb, but my ears strained to catch the noise.
The wind howled through the gaps in the corrugated tin roof.
