Underneath the wind, there was the distinct sound of car tires rolling slowly over gravel.

No headlights.

“They’re here,” Caleb whispered, his eyes widening in terror.

“They tracked me.”

“Sophia, watch him,” I said, stepping back toward the shadow of a wooden support beam.

“I’ll check the perimeter,” Sophia said, her voice dropping to a whisper.

“Keep him quiet.”

She slipped through the side door of the boatyard, her dark uniform blending into the night.

I turned back to Caleb, pressing the barrel of the gun against his forehead.

“If you make a sound, you go down first,” I whispered.

Caleb nodded quickly, his teeth chattering from fear and the biting cold.

“Where is Sophia supposed to go?” I asked, my mind racing.

“What do you mean?” Caleb asked.

“Wade,” I said, leaning in.

“Wade knows she’s helping me.”

“What is his plan for her?”

Caleb swallowed, his eyes darting toward the door Sophia had just exited.

“Wade has a warrant,” Caleb whispered.

“It’s fake, but it’s signed.”

“They’re going to arrest her for obstruction and conspiracy.”

“If they catch her, they’re taking her straight to the county precinct.”
