The Silent Mirror and the Lies That Broke My Family
“Wade’s personal cells are in the basement.”
“Nobody goes down there without his permission.”
“Once she’s in there, she won’t come out.”
My stomach wrenched.
I looked toward the side door where Sophia had gone.
Outside, the sound of a sudden struggle broke through the wind.
There was a muffled shout, the scuffle of heavy boots on wet gravel, and then a sharp gasp.
“Sophia!” I called out, forgetting about Caleb for a fraction of a second.
I ran toward the door, my boots skidding on the slick concrete.
Through the dirty glass pane of the side door, I saw the silhouette of a black SUV.
Two men in dark tactical gear were forcing Sophia into the back seat.
One of them had a hand clamped over her mouth.
She kicked, her boot striking the side panel of the vehicle with a loud metallic thud.
The second man raised a heavy flashlight and struck her across the temple.
Sophia went limp.
They shoved her into the rear of the SUV and slammed the door.
The vehicle immediately accelerated, its tires throwing up gravel as it sped away into the darkness.
