The rain tapped against the tall leaded glass windows of my father’s dining room.

Inside, the air smelled of beeswax, roasted lamb, and expensive red wine.

I sat near the end of the long mahogany table, wearing a plain gray wool dress.

My sister, Caroline, sat opposite me, her new diamond ring catching the light of the chandelier.

“It must be hard for you, Evelyn, seeing how real careers progress,” my father said from the head of the table.

He cut his meat with precise, heavy strokes.

“While you waste your years doing clerical work in the Navy, Caroline is marrying a man on the fast track.”

I took a quiet sip of water.

I did not correct him.

I had never corrected him.

To my family, my decision to join the military twenty-four years ago was a quiet embarrassment.

They assumed I spent my days filing papers in some windowless office, earning a meager government salary.

“Nathan is a Commander in the Navy SEALs,” Caroline said, leaning forward.

She smiled, her eyes bright with a sharp sort of triumph.

“He actually does important work, Evelyn. His entire future depends on the approval of the Pentagon’s logistics and procurement command.”

“The Department of Navy Logistics is indeed very influential,” I said softly.

My father laughed, a dry, dismissive sound that echoed off the wood-paneled walls.

“As if you would know anything about the inner workings of the Pentagon, Evelyn. You probably just type up their lunch orders.”

I kept my hands folded in my lap.

Beneath the table, my fingers trace the faint line of an old scar, a reminder of sea duty from a lifetime ago.

“We just want you to understand the difference,” Caroline added, adjusting her pearl necklace.

“Nathan is a leader of men. When he enters a room, people notice.”

The front door bell rang, its chime echoing through the high-ceilinged foyer.

“That must be him,” Caroline said, instantly standing up.

She smoothed her silk dress and hurried out of the dining room.

My father looked at me, shaking his head.

“Try not to talk about your job tonight, Evelyn. I don’t want you embarrassing Caroline in front of a man of Nathan’s caliber.”
