I dropped to my knees, catching her in my arms as she threw her hands around my neck.
She smelled of the strawberry shampoo I had used on her this morning.
I held her so tight I was afraid I would hurt her, but she didn’t complain.
“I’ve got you,” I whispered into her hair. “I’ve got you, baby.”
Nathan knelt down beside us, his hand resting gently on Rosie’s shoulder.
Rosie looked up, her small hand reaching out to touch Nathan’s sleeve.
“Are we safe now?” she asked.
“You’re safe,” Nathan said, his voice unusually soft. “Nobody is going to take you away.”
Two more police officers entered the lobby, leading Grant in handcuffs.
His shirt was wrinkled, his tie pulled loose, and his hair was messy.
He glared at Nathan, his jaw clenching.
“This isn’t over, Cole,” Grant spat. “My lawyers will have me out by dinner.”
“Your lawyers are currently being subpoenaed, Grant,” Nathan said, standing up.
One of the officers stepped between them, pushing Grant toward the exit.
“Let’s move, sir,” the officer said.
