Evelyn followed them out, her heels clicking rapidly on the floor as she tried to make a phone call.
Vanessa Hale walked past them without looking back, already speaking into her phone.
“Yes, this is Vanessa,” she said into the receiver. “I need to release a statement regarding my engagement.”
Our lawyer, Sarah Jenkins, hurried into the lobby, holding a tablet and a stack of papers.
“I just spoke with the judge’s clerk,” Sarah said, breathing heavily.
Nathan turned to her. “What’s the status?”
“The emergency hearing is being processed right now,” Sarah said.
She looked at Rosie, then back at Nathan and me.

I stood up, holding Rosie close to my hip.
“What does that mean?” I asked.
