I lifted the lid.

Inside, resting on a bed of white foam, was a silver wrist watch.

The glass face of the watch was completely shattered.

Hannah gasped, covering her mouth with both hands.

“That belongs to Luke,” she whispered.

“Your husband,” I said.

“Yes,” she said. “He wore it when he left for his trip.”

“He didn’t go on a trip, did he, Hannah?” I asked.

She shook her head, tears spilling over her eyelashes.

“He owes people money, Mark,” she said. “A lot of money.”

“And they know where you are,” I said.

“They tracked my phone,” she said. “I didn’t think they would actually find us here.”

“They just did,” I said.

I looked toward the hallway where the children were sleeping.

Toby, Lily, Leo, and Mia were innocent in all of this.

My sister and her husband had brought a storm to my doorstep, but I would not let it touch the kids.

“We are leaving,” I said.

“Where?” Hannah asked. “We can’t go to a hotel. They will find us.”

“I have a contact,” I said. “A secure facility.”
