The water outside was churning into a white froth as the twin screws fought the harbor current.

A spotlight from the shore suddenly swept across the cabin.

The bright white beam illuminated the falling snow and the ruins of the room.

A voice amplified by a megaphone boomed over the water.

“This is the Chicago Police Department!” the voice roared.

“Shut down your engines immediately!”

“Lay down your weapons and step onto the deck with your hands visible!”

Marcus looked out the window at the flashing lights.

He knew the game was over.

He slowly pulled his hand out of his jacket, his palms open and empty.

“Smart,” I said.

I did not lower my gun.

I kept it aimed at him while I reached out with my left hand to tap the intercom.

“Luca,” I said.

“Are you in position?”

The radio on my belt static-clicked twice.

“I am at the gate house, Boss,” Luca’s voice came through.

“The precinct guys are moving in, but Kane’s personal security on the dock is fighting back.”

“They are trying to buy him time to get to his car.”
