“Where is Kane now?” I asked.

“He just ran down the gangway,” Luca said.

“He has two men with him.”

“They are heading toward the black SUV near the warehouse.”

I looked back at the lower deck door.

The wood was splintered from the bullet holes, but it remained closed.

“Isabella!” I called out again.

The door opened an inch, and my sister’s face appeared in the gap.

She looked tired, her eyes dark with exhaustion, but she was alive.

Behind her, I could see Eli’s red winter hat.

“Is the boy safe?” I asked.

“He is fine,” she said.

“But we need to get out of this cabin.”

“The engine compartment is starting to smoke.”

A low, rumbling vibration shook the floorboards beneath my boots.

The pilot must have pushed the engines past their limit trying to break free of the dock.

The smell of hot oil was growing stronger, mixing with the gunpowder.

“Get up,” I told Marcus.

“Lead the way out to the deck.”

“If you make one wrong move, you won’t make it to the precinct.”

Marcus nodded slowly, his face grim.
