The Six Hour Countdown to Expose the City’s Darkest Shadow
I needed to pinpoint the exact frequency.
Kane’s men wouldn’t be using standard police scanners.
They used military-grade, frequency-hopping digital radios.
But my organization had access to the same black-market tech.
I kept one hand on the steering wheel and reached for the dashboard console.
“Luca,” I said, my voice tight as I navigated a sharp turn. “Run the receiver through the digital handshake protocols.”
“I’m on it,” Luca said over the speaker. “They’re using a rolling encryption key based on an old military standard.”
The wipers cleared a patch of wet snow from the windshield just in time for me to see a patch of black ice.
I corrected the steering wheel, keeping the heavy SUV from sliding.
In the back seat, Eli let out a soft gasp but kept quiet.
“Almost there,” Luca muttered over the line. “I’m routing the decryption sequence through our server in Cicero.”
The console screen in the dashboard flickered.
Lines of code began to resolve into readable frequencies.
A low hum came through the car speakers, followed by a burst of static.
“The signal is strong,” I said. “Where are they?”
