“They’re concentrated at Slip 14,” Luca said. “That’s the deep-water berth at the end of the eastern pier.”
“Any perimeter patrols?” I asked.
“Two men on the gate, and another two walking the fence line,” he said. “They have a truck parked near the generator shed.”
I memorized the layout of the harbor in my head.
The eastern pier was exposed, with little cover except for some storage containers and fuel tanks.
“I’m close,” I said. “Keep the channel open.”
“Dante, if they spot you, you won’t have any backup,” Luca warned. “The harbor is completely isolated.”
“I know,” I said.
The streetlights became fewer and further apart as we neared the industrial canal.
The snow had piled up on the sides of the road, leaving only a single cleared lane.
I turned the headlights off, relying on the ambient glow of the city lights reflecting off the low clouds.
The cabin of the SUV was silent except for the soft rush of the heater and the occasional burst of radio static.
“Dante?” Eli’s voice was tiny from the back.
