I picked up the desk phone and pressed the three-digit code for the building security desk.

“This is Arden Vance,” I said into the receiver.

“I need two security officers in the executive suite immediately.”

“Yes, ma’am,” the voice on the other end replied.

I hung up the phone and stood by the window, looking out at the gray clouds gathering over the city.

The rain was starting to fall, streaking the glass with thin, diagonal lines.

Within five minutes, two uniformed security guards entered the office.

They looked uncomfortable, their eyes shifting between Bianca and me.

“Please escort Ms. Vance to the main lobby and wait with her until the police arrive,” I said.

Bianca stood up slowly, her movements stiff.

She picked up her handbag but did not look at me as she walked out.

The office felt very quiet after they left.

I sat down in the chair behind Graham’s mahogany desk.

The desk was immaculate, save for a silver pen set and a framed photograph of our family.

I turned the photograph face down on the wood.

The phone on the desk rang.
