“She has been boasting about that watch since she arrived,” Mr. Han noted. “She took it off earlier at the pool pavilion to show the cabana staff, demanding they polish the crystal.”

I looked down at the table again.

Claire had unclasped the watch and placed it on the white linen tablecloth next to her champagne flute, letting the Sterling women get a closer look.

“It is truly one of a kind,” Claire said, her voice carrying across the terrace. “I would be absolutely devastated if anything ever happened to it.”

Daniel was barely listening, his eyes scanning the terrace nervously.

He was still looking for me, worried I might appear and ruin his perfect family image.

I stood up straight and smoothed down my linen trousers.

“Mr. Han,” I said.

“Yes, Director?”

“I think it is time I walked through the terrace.”

“Would you like me to accompany you?”

“No,” I said. “Just stay close by. I want to see how my husband handles himself in public.”

I walked down the winding stone staircase that led from the mezzanine to the main terrace floor.
