The scent of blooming jasmine and expensive sunscreen filled the air.

As I stepped onto the marble tiles of the dining area, a few of the staff members bowed their heads slightly.

I gave them a small nod, keeping my eyes on the Mercer table.

I walked slowly, taking a path that would lead me right past their seating area.

Claire was still talking, her hand resting near her champagne glass.

But as I drew closer, I noticed her hand freeze.

She looked down at the white tablecloth.

The space next to her champagne flute was empty.

The sparkling Piaget watch was gone.

Claire’s eyes widened, and she stood up so quickly her chair scraped loudly against the marble.

“My watch,” she gasped, her voice instantly losing its refined tone. “Where is my watch?”

Vivian frowned, looking down at the table.

“Claire, dear, you just had it.”

“It’s not here!” Claire screamed, her face turning pale. “It was right here on the table!”

Daniel stood up, looking around the floor.

“Did it fall? Check under the table.”

The commotion quickly drew the attention of the surrounding diners.
