“Actually, I’m not,” Daniel said.

He tapped the folder against his leg.

“I just received an email from my contact in the city,” Daniel said, his gaze locked onto mine.

His phone buzzed in his hand at that exact moment.

He looked down at the screen, and his smile widened.

“In fact,” Daniel whispered, “here is the rest of it now.”

Daniel held the phone out to Ethan.

Ethan did not take it at first.

He looked at me, his brow furrowed in a deep, troubled line.

“What is this, Daniel?” Ethan asked.

“Read it,” Daniel said, pushing the device closer to him.

Ethan finally took the phone.

The screen cast a pale blue light over his tired face.

I stood perfectly still near the doorway, my hands clasped tightly in front of my apron.

The leather folder Daniel had been holding remained on the edge of the desk, its dark corner sticking out over the wood.

Ethan’s eyes moved quickly across the screen.

I watched the color drain from his cheeks.

“Grace,” Ethan said, his voice barely a whisper.
