Two men in dark suits stepped inside, followed by a woman carrying a leather briefcase.

They did not look at the view of Chicago through the windows.

“Daniel Pierce?” the woman asked, stepping toward the table.

Daniel did not answer.

“I am Special Agent Vance with the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” she said, showing her badge. “We have a warrant for your arrest on charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, medical trial manipulation, and obstruction of justice.”

She gestured to the two men behind her.

“Please stand up and place your hands behind your back.”

Daniel stood up slowly, his chair scraping loudly against the hardwood floor.

He looked at Ethan with a cold, blank stare.

“This won’t save her memory, Ethan,” Daniel said.

“I’m not trying to save her memory,” Ethan replied. “I’m protecting my children.”

The agents stepped forward and cuffed Daniel’s wrists behind his back.

They led him out of the room without another word.

The click of his leather shoes faded down the carpeted hallway.

I stood near the corner of the room, my hands clasped in front of my apron.
