My chest felt tight, but for the first time in two years, I could breathe.

Ethan turned his gaze to the woman from the FBI, who remained in the room.

“Agent Vance,” Ethan said. “Has the warrant been executed at the hospital as well?”

“Yes, Mr. Whitmore,” she said, opening her briefcase. “Our agents entered the administration building at St. Jude’s twenty minutes ago.”

She pulled out a set of official documents and placed them on the table.

“Chief Surgeon Dr. Joseph Sterling has been taken into custody,” she said.

The name sent a shiver down my spine.

“The digital records we recovered from the off-site server prove that Dr. Sterling falsified the surgical logs,” she continued.

She looked directly at me.

“The records confirm that the surgical error during Mrs. Whitmore’s emergency procedure was committed entirely by Dr. Sterling,” she said.

The room seemed to tilt slightly under my feet.

“The subsequent internal investigation that blamed Nurse Grace Holloway was entirely fabricated to protect the hospital’s funding,” she said.

I pressed my back against the wall to steady myself.
