I pressed myself against the shadow of the hallway wall.

“If she has a record, we will find it,” Daniel said. “And if she is trying to get close to your money, or to the children for other reasons, I will find out.”

“She is not like that,” Ethan said, though there was a hint of hesitation in his voice now.

“You are blind to it because you are desperate,” Daniel said. “But I am not. I am protecting this family.”

I took a slow breath, trying to steady my racing heart.

I had to face them.

I walked to the door and pushed it open.

Both men turned to look at me.

Daniel stood by the fireplace, a leather folder in his hand.

Ethan sat behind his desk, looking older than his thirty-eight years.

“Good morning,” I said, keeping my voice calm.

Daniel smiled, but his eyes were cold as ice.

“Ah, the new nanny,” Daniel said. “We were just discussing your credentials, Grace.”

“I am ready to start,” I said, looking at Ethan.

Ethan stood up. “Grace, Daniel was just leaving.”
