The Silent Mirror and the Lies That Broke My Family
Caleb gasped when he saw Sophia, her face bruised and bloody.
“Get in,” I told her.
She climbed into the back cab, and I jumped into the driver’s seat.
I started the engine and slammed the truck into reverse, spraying gravel.
“Did you get them?” Caleb asked, his voice cracking.
I pulled the three hard drives from my pocket and threw them onto the console.
Caleb stared at them.
“This is suicide,” Caleb said. “Margaret will kill us all.”
“She already tried,” Sophia said from the back.
She was holding her ribs, leaning against the seat.
“Are you okay?” I asked her in the rearview mirror.
“I’ve had worse,” she said. “We need to get these to someone outside the county.”
“We don’t have time,” I said. “Margaret has Leo.”
Sophia sat up straighter, her expression hardening.
“What do you mean?” she asked.
“She called me,” I said. “She knows we have the ledger.”
“She gave me twenty minutes to bring it to the estate, or she sends Leo out of the country.”
Sophia cursed under her breath.
“Where is she now?” Sophia asked.
