“She said the estate,” I said. “But she’s lying.”

“Why would she lie?” Caleb asked.

“Because she knows I’d bring the police there,” I said. “She’s at the clinic.”

“The private clinic?” Sophia asked.

“Yes,” I said. “The one Dr. Vale runs.”

“It has a private airstrip behind the hills,” I said. “My dad used to fly his Cessna out of there.”

Sophia reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted radio.

“I managed to call the state police before Wade took my phone,” she said.

“They’re sending a task force from the north district.”

“How long?” I asked.

“Thirty minutes,” she said. “Maybe forty.”

“That’s too late,” I said.

I pressed the accelerator, the truck surging forward onto the main highway.

The headlights cut through the dark, reflecting off the pine trees lining the road.

“We have to stop her before she gets to the plane,” Sophia said.

“I’m going to,” I said.

My phone, lying on the dashboard, suddenly lit up.

The screen showed an incoming call from an unknown number.

I stared at the glowing screen as the phone vibrated against the plastic.
