“Do you know the combination?” I asked.

“No,” she said. “But Wade keeps his personal key on that ring.”

I sifted through the brass keys until I found a small, silver one with a black plastic head.

I inserted it into the keyhole on the safe’s digital keypad.

It turned with a heavy click.

The electronic lock beeped, and the heavy door swung open.

Inside were stack of manila folders, three black hard drives, and bundles of cash.

I grabbed the three hard drives and stuffed them into my jacket pocket.

“Are these the ones?” I asked.

“Yes,” Sophia said. “That’s his digital insurance policy.”

“Let’s go,” I said.

We ran back toward the janitor’s closet.

As we reached the hallway, the front door of the precinct clicked open.

“Miller?” a voice called out from the lobby.

It was the second deputy, returning from his patrol.

“Go,” I whispered to Sophia.

We scrambled through the ventilation window, sliding out into the mud.

The cold rain hit us instantly.

We ran through the pines, our boots splashing through puddles.

We reached my truck, and I threw the passenger door open.
