I had to move that jar before they reached it.
“Mr. DeLuca,” I said, standing up. “Let me go check on Leo. The noise might have scared him.”
Silvio let out a dry, hacking laugh.
“Running already, Jenkins?” he asked.
“Let her go,” Matteo said.
His eyes locked onto mine, cold and unreadable.
“But Enzo, go with her. Do not leave her side.”
“Yes, boss,” Enzo said.
I walked out of the living room, Enzo’s heavy footsteps right behind me.
The air in the hallway felt cold.
The penthouse was vast, filled with expensive art and silent corners.
As we neared the nursery, I paused.
“I need to get Leo’s spare blanket from my room,” I told Enzo. “He likes the blue one. It calms him.”
Enzo stared down at me.
His face was a mask of professional indifference.
“Your room is being searched right now,” Enzo said. “I’ll get it for you.”
“No,” I said quickly. “It’s tucked away. I know exactly where it is.”
I didn’t wait for his permission.
I turned the corner into the staff wing and pushed open my door.
