Another guard was already inside.

My clothes were scattered on the floor.

My small wooden desk had been ransacked.

“Find anything?” Enzo asked, stepping into the room behind me.

“Nothing,” the guard said, shutting my closet door.

Enzo walked to my bed.

He grabbed the edge of the mattress and lifted it.

I closed my eyes, waiting for the sound of glass breaking.

“Nothing here,” Enzo said, dropping the mattress back down.

I opened my eyes.

The space under the bed was completely empty.

The jar of tea was gone.

I looked around the room, panic rising in my throat.

My notebook was gone too.

I had kept a small, black notebook hidden in my nightstand drawer.

It held dates, times, and Leo’s symptoms after Mrs. Higgins served him his tea.

Someone had already cleaned out my room.

“Where is the blanket?” Enzo asked.

“I… I must have left it in the laundry room,” I stammered.

Enzo grunted. “Back to the nursery. Now.”

He escorted me back down the hall.

In the nursery, Dr. Harrison was bending over Leo’s crib.
