I needed to stop it, but only Nathan had the authorization token.

Then, I heard the front door open and close again.

Footsteps hurried down the hallway toward the master bedroom.

I stepped out of the guest room.

The door to the master bedroom was slightly ajar.

I saw Sloane standing by Nathan’s dresser, holding his digital banking security token in her hand.

She looked up and saw me standing in the doorway.

She smiled.

“You shouldn’t be wandering around in the dark, Catherine,” she said.

“It isn’t safe for a woman in your condition.”

I looked at the small black device in her hand.

The screen on the token flickered with a fresh six-digit code.

“What are you doing with my husband’s token, Sloane?” I asked.

“I am just helping him clear some pending invoices,” she said, her voice dripping with false sweetness.

“He is so busy these days.”

“He doesn’t have the time to manage all these accounts.”

“Put it down,” I said.

“This is my family’s trust.”

Sloane laughed, a low, mocking sound.

She took a step toward me, her heels clicking loudly on the hardwood floor.
