“It was your family’s trust, Catherine,” she said.

“But Nathan signed the authorization.”

“The money is transferring tomorrow morning, and there is nothing you can do about it.”

I looked at her face, seeing the raw ambition behind her perfect makeup.

She thought she had won.

She thought I was helpless.

“We will see about that,” I said.

I pulled my phone out of my pocket.

Before she could react, I hit the speed dial for Margaret Crane.

The phone rang once.

“Margaret,” I said as soon as she answered.

“They are trying to transfer half a million dollars right now.”

Sloane’s smile vanished.

She lunged forward, her hand reaching for my phone.

I stepped back, slamming the bedroom door shut between us and throwing the lock.

Sloane pounded on the wood from the other side.

“Open this door, Catherine!” she yelled.

On the phone, Margaret’s voice was sharp and clear.

“I am calling the bank’s security division immediately,” Margaret said.

“I will freeze the account before nine AM.”

“Just stay locked in that room, Catherine.”

“I am coming back to the building.”
