I squinted at the small screen, my heart freezing in my chest.

“Lorenzo,” I whispered, my voice tight.

“Someone is in the hallway.”

Lorenzo didn’t move his eyes from Evan.

“Who is it?” he asked.

“I can’t tell,” I said, leaning closer to the glass. “The quality is too low.”

The figure stopped in front of the nursery door.

It reached out a hand toward the keypad.

On the screen, a small green light flashed on the keypad.

The heavy door began to slide open.

“How is that possible?” I muttered. “I thought you locked it.”

Evan’s smile disappeared.

For the first time, a look of genuine confusion crossed his pale face.

“That shouldn’t be happening,” Evan said, his voice losing its calm edge.

“No one has that bypass code except me.”

He looked down at his remote, then back up at the server rack.

“Who is in the house, Evan?” Lorenzo roared, his patience entirely gone.

Before Evan could answer, my phone began to vibrate violently in my hand.

The screen changed from the security feed to an incoming call.

The caller ID was blocked.
