I looked at Lorenzo, then at the vibrating phone.

The ringing sound was incredibly loud in the quiet basement.

My finger hovered over the green button, my heart hammering against my ribs as I prepared to answer.

I slid my thumb across the glass and pressed the phone to my ear.

“Hunter,” a voice whispered through the static.

It was Mrs. Bellamy, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps.

“He’s in the east wing,” she gasped, the sound of wind whistling through an open window in the background. “He made me give him the emergency bypass. Hunter, please, he has—”

The line went dead with a sharp, digital click.

I lowered the phone, my hand trembling against my thigh.

“That was Bellamy,” I said, looking up at Lorenzo. “She said someone is in the east wing. They have the bypass.”

Lorenzo’s hand tightened around the collar of Evan’s shirt, pulling the younger man so close their noses almost touched.

“Who did you give that code to?” Lorenzo growled, his voice vibrating in the small, warm server room.

Evan swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing against the blue collar of his linen shirt.
