“He’s killing the feeds,” I said.

Only one camera was still active.

It was the high-angle camera overlooking the nursery hallway.

The hallway was empty, the light above the door glowing a solid, ominous red.

“You see?” Evan said, his voice echoing in the small server room.

“You are locked in your own fortress, Mr. Rossi.”

“And your son is inside a cage.”

Lorenzo took another step forward, the barrel of the gun now only feet from Evan’s face.

“I will shoot you,” Lorenzo said, his voice shaking with rage.

“If you shoot me, my thumb releases this button,” Evan said.

“The backup power to the nursery locks will cut instantly.”

“They will never open.”

We stood in a tense, terrible silence.

The only sound was the steady hum of the server fans and the distant, muffled sound of the wind outside the mansion.

I looked at the phone screen in my hand, watching the single active camera feed.

Suddenly, the image flickered.

A shadow appeared at the far end of the nursery hallway.

It was moving slowly, close to the wall.
