The Silent Betrayal of the Starving Heir in the Rossi Estate
My mind raced, trying to place the face of the delivery courier.
Then it hit me.
“Evan Morris,” I said, the name tasting like ash in my mouth. “Dr. Halloran’s assistant.”
Mrs. Bellamy nodded slowly, fresh tears spilling over her eyelashes.
“He has been here for weeks, Hunter,” she said, looking directly at me. “Watching you. Watching the baby.”
Lorenzo turned to me, his expression unreadable in the blue light.
“The assistant,” Lorenzo muttered. “The one who helped set up the nursery monitors.”
“Yes,” Mrs. Bellamy said, her voice shaking. “He knew the bypass codes because he installed the backup generator interface last month.”
She reached for a small, white pill bottle on the edge of her desk, her fingers twitching.
“He told me if I locked the system from this terminal, the security guard at the front gate wouldn’t receive the alerts.”
“Where is Evan now?” I asked, my voice trembling.
“He went down to the basement,” Mrs. Bellamy said. “To the main power grid.”
“Why?” Lorenzo asked.
“He is going to cut the backup power to the nursery,” she whispered. “He wants the incubator to stop.”
