“He is waiting for you, Meredith,” she said, pointing toward his open door. “Go right on in.”

I walked into his office and closed the door behind me.

David was standing by the window, holding a mug of coffee.

“I saw your truck pull in,” he said, gesturing for me to sit. “You look pale.”

“I got a phone call on the way here,” I said, sinking into the leather chair. “A blocked number. A man’s voice told me I should have let them sell the place.”

David set his mug down on his desk and sat opposite me.

“Did he threaten you directly?” he asked, his expression serious.

“No,” I said. “Just that one sentence. Then he hung up.”

David sighed and opened a thick blue folder on his desk.

“It was likely someone Trevor hired, or perhaps Trevor himself using a burner phone,” David said. “But he won’t be making any more calls for a while.”

“What happened?” I asked.

“The state police arrested Trevor two hours ago,” David said.

I blinked, trying to process the words.

“They arrested him?” I asked.
