“The real ones.”

“They show every transfer Carter authorized from the Vale estate trust.”

“Every single one.”

Carter’s face went dark red.

“Sloane, shut up,” he barked, lunging forward to grab her arm.

She pulled away from him, her shoulder hitting the edge of the antique sideboard.

A silver tray rattled against the wood.

“Don’t touch me!” she shrieked.

“Evelyn, listen to me.”

“I will testify.”

“I will go on the record against him.”

“I’ll give the prosecutors everything on the dummy corporations in Delaware.”

“Just get Lydia to get me immunity.”

“Please.”

She was begging now, her hands reaching out toward me, though she did not dare touch my coat.

“You want to destroy him,” Sloane said.

“I know you do.”

“I can help you do it.”

“But you have to protect me from them.”

I looked at Carter.

A bead of sweat was tracing a line down his temple, disappearing into his collar.

He looked smaller than he had five minutes ago.

“She’s lying, Evelyn,” Carter said, his voice cracking.

“She’s trying to save her own skin.”

“She planned the whole diversion.”
