“She slept the whole time, Mrs. Vale,” Maria said.

“Thank you, Maria,” I said.

“You can go home now. I will handle the night feeding.”

Once Maria left, I went to the nursery.

June was sleeping soundly in her crib, her small chest rising and falling.

I kissed her forehead, her skin warm and soft.

I went to the kitchen and sat at the small wooden table.

I placed the silver tablet in front of me.

I also took out my personal phone and called Lydia.

It rang four times before she answered, her voice thick with sleep.

“Evelyn?” she asked. “What’s wrong? It’s past midnight.”

“Sloane deleted the design archives,” I said, my voice flat.

There was a long silence on the other end of the line.

“What?” Lydia asked. “How? We had a temporary freeze on asset modification.”

“She bypassed it,” I said.

“She had admin access. Carter gave it to her weeks ago.”

Lydia cursed under her breath.

“We can file for sanctions, but if the files are gone, recovery will take weeks, if we can do it at all.”
