“Threatening, harassing, or attempting to coerce a general officer of the United States military is a federal offense,” Harris said.

One of the investigators behind Harris took a half-step forward, his hand resting near his sidearm.

“Furthermore,” Harris continued, “falsifying reports of assault against a military official to local or federal authorities carries severe statutory penalties.”

Daniel looked at the investigator’s hand, then at the badge pinned to Harris’s coat.

“She shoved Ava,” Daniel said, pointing a finger at me. “Ask Ava. She has the bruise.”

Harris finally looked up the stairs at Ava.

“Young lady, I suggest you think very carefully before you speak to federal investigators,” Harris said.

Ava shrank back against the drywall, her fingers tightening on the banister.

“She… she didn’t hit me,” Ava muttered, her voice barely audible.

Daniel turned around, his face turning a deep, angry red. “Ava, what are you saying? You told me she pushed you.”

“I lied, Dad,” Ava sobbed, covering her face with her hands. “I just wanted her to leave.”

Daniel stood frozen, his mouth slightly open.
