He reached out and grabbed the edge of the table, leaning down until his face was only inches from mine.

“I will drag this out for years,” he whispered. “I will spend every dime we have on lawyers before I let you keep a single dollar.”

“The forensic report is already in the hands of the district attorney, Derek,” I said.

His eyes widened slightly, the skin around his temples tightening.

“What did you say?” he asked.

“Annika delivered a duplicate copy of the escrow transfers to the financial crimes division this afternoon,” I said.

“You didn’t,” he whispered.

“I did,” I said.

I stood up, smoothing the front of my dress.

“I suggest you call your defense attorney, Derek,” I said. “I believe they will be much more expensive than Annika.”

I walked past him, my heels clicking softly against the hardwood floor.

He did not try to stop me.

He stood by the table, staring at the empty chairs and the white pages scattered across the dark wood.

As I reached the stairs, his phone began to vibrate again.
