The Price of Silence and the Secrets Served at the Table
The blue light of the screen illuminated his face in the darkened room.
I reached the landing and looked down at him.
He was staring at the phone, his hand hovering over the screen, looking smaller than he ever had before.
His phone screen lit up with another call, the name of his chief financial officer flashing against the glass.
Derek answered the phone.
His thumb swiped the screen with a jerky, desperate motion.
He pressed the speakerphone button.
The voice of Roger, his chief financial officer, filled the hallway.
“Derek, what the hell is going on?”
Roger’s voice was loud, distorted by the speaker.
Derek cleared his throat, trying to force his usual authority into his tone.
“Roger, it is late,” Derek said. “I am in the middle of a private dinner.”
“Not anymore you aren’t,” Roger snapped. “I just received an anonymous email containing fifty pages of internal bank transfers.”
Derek’s hand tightened around the casing of his phone.
“That is proprietary company information,” Derek said. “Whoever sent that to you has violated their non-disclosure agreement.”
