“What lawyer, Melanie?” I asked, stepping forward.

“Marcus Vance,” Melanie sobbed, covering her face with her hands. “The family law attorney downtown. The one who handles high-profile custody battles.”

Leo stared at his sister, his hands dropping to his sides.

“She retained him yesterday,” Melanie whispered through her fingers. “She paid him twenty thousand dollars from your account to handle the emergency filing.”

“An emergency filing for what?” Leo asked, his voice barely a whisper.

“For Sam,” Melanie said, looking up with red, swollen eyes. “She wants him, Leo. She’s going to take him from you.”

My phone buzzed in my pocket, the vibration loud against my thigh.

I pulled it out and looked at the screen.

It was a text from an unknown number, containing a scanned document with my name on it.

I tapped the file, my breath catching in my throat as the page loaded.

The header read: *Iowa Department of Human Services – Amended Consultation Report.*

Beneath it was my signature, but the words above it had been completely altered.

The document stated that I had admitted to severe postpartum psychosis during my initial hospital intake.
