I stared at the screen, the room spinning around me.

“Leo,” I whispered, holding the phone out to him.

The phone began to ring in my hand, the screen flashing with an incoming call from our family attorney.

Leo snatched the phone from my hand.

He pressed the speaker button, his thumb trembling against the glass screen.

“Marcus?” Leo asked, his voice tight.

“Leo, I just got a notification from the courthouse,” Marcus, our family attorney, said. His voice was muffled, competing with the hum of the hospital’s air conditioning.

“Vance just filed an ex parte motion for emergency temporary custody of Sam.”

My stomach dropped, a cold weight settling behind my ribs.

“On what grounds?” Leo demanded. “Grace is right here. She hasn’t done anything.”

“He submitted a sealed DHS document,” Marcus said. “It’s an amended consultation report. It states that Grace admitted to severe postpartum psychosis and active hallucinations during her intake.”

“It’s a lie,” I said, my voice cracking. “Marcus, I never said that. They changed the paper.”
