“Why would Marcus help me?” I asked.

“Because he wants Derek in prison,” Marisol said.

“And he knew you were the only one who could get inside the condo to find this physical proof.”

She tapped her fingers on the mahogany desk, her expression grim.

“But we have a legal hurdle,” she said.

“If we just present this paper, Derek’s lawyer will claim you signed it and forgot, or that you planted it to frame him.”

“We need the physical suitcase with the cut lining,” she said.

“It proves he was actively hiding the policy in his personal belongings.”

“I can go back and get it tonight,” I said.

“No,” Marisol said quickly, holding up her hand.

“That is far too dangerous.”

“If he realizes the policy is missing, he will know you found it.”

“We must do this legally and protect you at the same time,” she said.

“I am going to contact the state attorney’s office tonight.”

“We will secure an emergency search warrant for your condo to seize the suitcase and his electronics.”

I felt a chill run down my spine despite the warm office.
