The Price of Secrets and the Fall of My Abusive Husband
“What if he finds out before the police get there?” I asked.
“We have to move fast,” Marisol said.
“You are not going back to that condo tonight.”
“I want you to stay at a hotel near the airport under a different name.”
She picked up her desk phone and began dialing.
I sat in the quiet office, listening to the hum of the air conditioner.
I kept thinking about the black leather suitcase sitting on the top shelf of our closet.

“The assistant state attorney is reviewing the affidavit now,” Marisol said, hanging up the phone.
“We should have the warrant signed by a judge first thing in the morning.”
“The police will execute it tomorrow.”
I nodded, but my hands remained cold.
We walked out of the building together into the warm Miami night.
