“What do you mean?” I asked.

“We need the physical ledgers,” Gabriel said. “The ones our mother found.”

I closed my eyes, trying to remember.

My mother had kept a private set of books for the foundation.

She didn’t trust the digital accounting software Ethan had installed.

“Where are they?” I asked Vanessa.

“I don’t know,” Vanessa said, shaking her head. “I swear, I don’t know.”

“Think,” I said, my voice rising. “She must have hidden them.”

“She spent her last weeks at the lake house,” Vanessa said, wiping her face with the back of her sleeve. “She said she felt safer there.”

The lake house.

It was a small, secluded property in Lake Geneva, three hours north of the city.

Our mother had inherited it from her parents.

Richard had always hated it because it was out of his control.

“Eleanor Price mentioned that property,” I said to Gabriel.

“The loyal friend,” Gabriel said.

“She told me my mother left a box of personal effects there,” I said. “She said I would know what to do with them when the time came.”
