“The original ledgers are there,” Gabriel said.
“If they are, Richard knows it too,” I said. “Now that the federal prosecutors are looking at the foundation, he’ll be desperate to find them.”
“He’ll want to burn them,” Gabriel said.
Vanessa looked between us, her panic growing.
“What about my deal?” she asked. “I gave you the tape.”
“You gave us a copy,” I said. “You will get exactly what you deserve, Vanessa. Nothing more.”
“You can’t leave me to face this alone,” she cried.
“You chose Ethan,” I said. “You chose his lies.”
Gabriel shut his laptop and put it into his leather briefcase.
“We need to get to the lake house before the storm clears,” Gabriel said.
“It’s nearly midnight,” I said.
“That gives us a three-hour head start,” Gabriel said. “Richard still thinks you are hiding in the city.”
He looked at Vanessa.
“You’re staying here,” Gabriel told her.
“You can’t lock me in,” she said.
“I can,” Gabriel said. “And I will. My security team will be outside the door.”
He picked up his keys from the counter.
“Let’s go, Claire,” he said.
