Gabriel was scanning the first few pages of the ledger into his secure server.
The green light of the scanner washed over his face.
“These are immaculate,” Gabriel said. “The bank seals are still intact.”
“This proves Richard didn’t just steal from the foundation,” he said.
“He used the foundation to launder the bribes from Joseph Vance,” he added.
I walked over to the window, looking out at the storm.
My phone buzzed in my pocket.
I pulled it out, expecting a message from the authorities.
It was an unknown number.
I swiped the screen and answered.
“Claire,” a voice whispered.
It was Vanessa.
She sounded like she was hiding in a closet, her voice muffled and shaking.
“Vanessa?” I said, stepping away from Gabriel and Eleanor.
“Don’t hang up, please,” she sobbed.
“They are going to arrest Ethan,” she said. “They are going to arrest me.”
“You helped him frame me, Vanessa,” I said, my voice hardening. “You made your choice.”
“I didn’t know,” she cried. “I didn’t know how bad it was.”
“I have something,” she whispered.
“Something you need,” she added.
