I frowned, leaning against the cold glass of the window.

“What do you have?” I asked.

“It’s about Mom,” Vanessa said.

My heart stopped.

“What about her?” I asked, my grip tightening on the phone.

“I have a recording,” Vanessa said, her voice dropping even lower.

“A recording of Dad,” she said. “From the night she died.”

“He didn’t just let her die, Claire,” she whispered. “He took her medicine away.”

“I have him admitting it on tape,” she said.

“I’ll give it to you,” she added, her breath hitching. “But you have to save me.”

“You have to give me access to the trust,” she said. “You have to get me out of this.”

I stared out at the dark lake, the rain hammering against the glass.

Before I could answer, the front door of the penthouse opened with a soft click.

Gabriel stood up from the counter, his hand instantly going to his waist.

The door swung wide, revealing a figure dripping wet in the hallway light.

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

Water dripped from her blonde hair onto Gabriel’s dark hardwood floor.
