My phone buzzed in my cardigan pocket.

I pulled it out, expecting Robert’s name.

It was a text message from an unknown number.

It was a photograph.

It was blurry, taken from inside a car.

It showed a medical clinic building with a brick facade.

Underneath the photo, a text appeared.

*We are here. He is going to find out today.*

It was from Vanessa.

I stared at the screen, my coffee cooling in my hand.

Before I could reply, my phone began to ring again.

This time, the screen showed Daniel’s name.

I swiped the screen and put the phone to my ear.

The wind off the water rattled the glass of the porch door behind me.

“Daniel?” I said.

I heard heavy, ragged breathing on the other end of the line.

In the background, a car horn honked, followed by the muffled sound of traffic.

“She lied to me,” Daniel said, his voice raw and shaking.

I gripped my coffee mug tighter, the ceramic cold against my fingers.

“What are you talking about?” I asked.

“The baby,” he whispered.

“The test results just came back.”
