The Price of Blood and the Cost of Standing Alone Against Family
I kept my eyes on the road, the windshield wipers sweeping rhythmically across the glass.
“He didn’t have the grades, Daniel,” I said. “And his interview was disastrous.”
“That’s not how Patricia sees it,” Daniel said. “She thinks you ruined his chances by involving the police and making the family look unstable.”
“The police were involved because she threw a wine bottle at my head,” I said.
“She also got rejections from Columbia and Chicago this morning,” Daniel continued, ignoring my statement. “She is completely out of her mind, Elizabeth. She’s blaming you for destroying her son’s future.”
“She needs help,” I said.
“She doesn’t want help, she wants revenge,” Daniel said, his voice dropping to a whisper. “Michael tried to stop her, but she wouldn’t listen.”
“Stop her from doing what?” I asked, slowing down as I approached a red light.
“She has the security footage from the hallway outside your apartment,” Daniel said. “The camera Michael installed last year.”
My chest tightened as the light turned green.
“That footage shows her attacking me,” I said.
