The Price of Betrayal and the Business of Reclaiming My Life
“He has a second ledger,” Sophia whispered, her voice cracking over the line. “And a digital key to an offshore account.”
I looked at Arthur, who held his hand between the closing elevator doors to keep them open.
“Where is it?” I asked.
“He kept it in the house,” she said, her breathing shallow. “In the study. He told me it was his insurance policy if the business ever went under.”
“Why are you telling me this now?” I asked.
“Because he left me,” she said, and I could hear her crying now. “He took my savings to pay his retainer fee for a defense lawyer. He blocked my number this morning.”
I stood in the carpeted hallway, the cool air of the office building brushing against my face.
“Where exactly in the study, Sophia?” I asked.
“Behind the grandfather clock,” she said. “There is a loose wood panel near the base. The key is on a black USB drive inside a velvet pouch.”
“Thank you,” I said.
“Please don’t tell him I called you,” she whispered. “He’s desperate, Emily.”
“He can’t do anything to you now,” I said.
