“We need to move quickly on the house listing,” Arthur said, walking beside me. “Before they try to move any physical assets.”
“I have the keys,” I said. “And I have the list of inventory.”
“Good,” Arthur said. “I will contact the receiver first thing in the morning.”
We reached the elevator bank, and Arthur pressed the down button.
The metal doors reflected our figures.
I looked at my own reflection, noticing the tightness in my jaw and the cold determination in my eyes.
Just then, my phone buzzed in my purse.
I pulled it out, expecting a call from the real estate agent.
Instead, the screen showed an unknown number.
I pressed the phone to my ear.
“Emily?” a woman’s voice asked, trembling and breathless.
It was not a voice I expected to hear.
“Who is this?” I asked, my grip tightening on the phone.
“It’s Sophia,” the voice whispered. “You need to listen to me. Daniel didn’t tell you everything.”
The elevator doors opened, but I stayed where I was, pressing the phone to my ear.
“What do you mean, Sophia?” I asked.
