The Price of Betrayal and the Business of Reclaiming My Life
I put the car in gear and pulled away from the curb.
The wipers scraped across the glass, clearing the heavy sheet of rain for a brief second before the view blurred again.
I tapped the Bluetooth button on the steering wheel and dialed Arthur Vance.
The phone rang three times before his deep, steady voice filled the quiet cabin.
“Emily,” he said. “I didn’t expect to hear from you again tonight.”
“Sophia just texted me,” I said, keeping my eyes on the wet asphalt.
“The mistress?” Arthur asked, his tone shifting to professional alert.
“She wants to meet,” I said. “Right now. At the coffee shop on Fourth.”
“What does she want?”
“She wants a deal,” I replied. “She says she has the physical ledger for Daniel’s cash transactions.”
I heard the rustle of papers on the other end of the line.
“If she has that ledger, it changes the entire scope of our discovery,” Arthur said.
“She wants me to promise to keep her name out of the lawsuit,” I told him. “She is terrified.”
