“What recording?” she asked, though the color was already draining from her cheeks.

“The recording of your late husband’s accounts,” Daniel said.

He took a step forward, away from the elevator, pointing a finger at her.

“The offshore transfers you managed after his death,” Daniel said.

Clara froze.

“Daniel, what are you saying?” she asked.

“I told you I wouldn’t help you cover it up,” Daniel said.

His voice was suddenly filled with a dramatic, false solemnity.

“I told you that manipulating the tech stocks using your husband’s old shell companies was illegal,” he said.

Clara stared at him, her mouth slightly open.

“You liar,” she whispered.

“Agent Miller,” Daniel said, turning to the investigator. “This woman approached me six months ago.”

“Daniel, shut up,” Clara hissed.

“She had access to the legacy accounts of Bennett Holdings,” Daniel continued, his voice rising.

“He is lying!” Clara screamed.

She took a step toward Daniel, her hands clenched into fists.

“She threatened to ruin my marriage if I didn’t help her route the funds through Hayes Enterprises,” Daniel said.

He looked at Agent Miller with an expression of pure, fabricated innocence.
