“Are you okay?” Luke asked, his hands shaking as he took my face in his palms. “Elena, look at me.”

I tried to focus on his face, but his features were sliding away from me.

“The papers,” I whispered. “Luke… your father…”

“Don’t worry about Arthur,” Luke said, his voice thick with emotion. “We have the proof. We can stop him.”

“No,” I managed to say, the memory of Arthur’s cold office flashing in my mind. “You don’t understand.”

The warmth of the car’s heater washed over me, making my eyelids incredibly heavy.

“Just rest,” Luke said, pressing a kiss to my sweaty forehead. “We’re going to the hospital. Dr. Bennett is waiting.”

I wanted to tell him right then.

I wanted to tell him about the threat, the way his father had looked at me when he handed me the pen.

I wanted to tell him that Arthur had promised to ruin his life, to strip him of everything he had worked for, if I didn’t sign the divorce papers and disappear forever.

But the darkness was pulling at me, heavy and cold.
